Introducing: Cinema Tyler
Welcome to Cinema Tyler, a new project to share my love of movies with the people I love. Here’s the pitch Cinema Tyler is part traditional newsletter, part no-commitment film club/micro-cinema. The newsletter part is self-explanatory. Every week or so I’ll use this platform to share recommendations of things

After a brief hiatus while I recovered from being tired, Cinema Tyler is back!

In honor of Ally being selected for jury service, March's theme is trial movies. Come enjoy one of my favorite genres with films and wrestle with questions about the merits of participatory democracy, justice vs. judgement, and whether Elle Woods would have participated in January 6th!

  • Mar, 10 @ 7:0012 Angry Men (1957) – Sidney Lumet

We kick off our series with the first of two incredible trial movies by the great Sidney Lumet. The most exciting film you'll ever see set in a single room, 12 Angry Men is as much a movie about the jury deliberation process as it is about the American democratic process itself. This is one that I've spent a lot of time studying and disecting. Even if you've seen it before, come watch it again and I promise you'll find a new level to appreciate it on.

  • Mar, 12 @ 7:00The Verdict (1982) – Sidney Lumet

A quarter century later, Sidney Lumet returns to the courthouse to tell a very different story about the legal system and the search of moral absolution. Paul Newman plays a washed-up, alcoholic lawyer who realizes that the malpractice case he's accepted in hopes of a quick payout may be his only chance at personal redeption. Newman, who struggled with alcoholism all his life, pours so much personal pain and vulnerability into this role. It's astonishing.

  • Mar, 18 @ 7:00Runaway Jury (2003) – Gary Fleder

There was an era in the '80s and '90s when John Grisham would write a bestselling courtroom novel and then a few years later they'd make it into a movie and it would clean up at the box office and at the awards shows. Runaway Jury represents the end of that era. John Cusack, Gene Hackman, and Rachel Weisz star in this underrated legal thriller about jury manipulation.

  • Mar, 20 @ 7:00Legally Blonde (2001) – Robert Luketic

Do I really need to introduce Legally Blonde? We all know and love it already. This is a Friday showing and I'll be making themed cocktails. It'll be the perfect way to end a long week.

  • Mar, 25 @ 7:00Judgement at Nuremberg (1961) – Stanley Kramer

Wrapping-up trial month we have one of my personal favorite films. Judgement at Nuremberg is a fictionalized account of the post-WWII trials of the top Nazi judges. A challenging and rewarding film, it asks us to examine the line between what is legal and what is moral.
